One of the members who regularly sends me interesting links is Chris Daly. I suggested to him the other day to collect links to some of his favourite sites for the benefit of fellow cruisers. Here's the result (also published on the Bluewater list ) [MC]
"The definition of cruising is working on your boat in exotic places"
There are so many sail cruising websites out there. Apart from the many tantalising travelogs, there is also a wealth of incredibly useful information covering all aspects of sailing/cruising a yacht. Sometimes you need to dig deep to find the good stuff. Following is a review of just a few of the many sites on my list.
This is the website of Beth Leonard and Evans Starzinger. Beth is the author of "Voyagers Handbook" which is an excellent cruising boat book. The website is well worth a look, particularly the FAQ link and its sub-links. Don't miss www.bethandevans.com/category_1_requirements.htm for some very pragmatic comments on safety requirements.
This site covers many dimensions of cruising and has the largest collection of Cruising Narratives I have come across. It is well worth scanning some of these for information that may be relevant. One of the better links is the following site:
See "Techniques and Tips" on left hand side of page.
Plus links at top of page to: "Stuff that works"; "Gear Failures and Fixes"; "Rants and Musings".
The design of this site is impressive and reflects the same detail that the owner applied to the design of a his world cruising catamaran.
The design/construction link shows how you might like to specify the next boat you have built!
The two links under techno_Electronics, Electrical relating to Grounding and RFI are a must-read.
Also, techno_Boom Furler Issues has some useful insights.
Finally, reading http://www.maxingout.com/storm_management.htm may save your life! Check out "Dealing with Black Holes", which are not extra-terrestrial but out there in places like the Tasman.
Enjoy,
Chris Daly.
