We have tried to get down to Bantry Bay several times in the last six months, but every time the weather has conspired against us. This time it will be third time 'lucky'! The plan is to set out from the Barenjoey Port Hand Pile at 0930 hrs on Saturday 29th September. After our sail down we can have lunch aboard while we wait for the bridge opening, scheduled for 1430hrs. From here we move into Bantry Bay and anchor or pick up one of the public moorings for the night.
There is a small public jetty and a park adjacent to the bay, which makes an ideal place to get ashore for pre-dinner drinks and a BBQ dinner if the conditions are good.
Depending on the conditions, and the vote of those attending, we can set off on a bush walk on the Sunday morning or a dinghy run up to the extremities of Middle Harbour. The Echo Point café will be calling for afternoon tea!
After pre-dinner drinks at the park again it will be dinner aboard, and then maybe the first “Trivial Pursuit” challenge for the year.
With two possible bridge openings, 0830hrs and 1000hrs on the Monday morning, we will monitor the weather forecast for the most suitable departure time.
This cruise, weather permitting, will be a delightful blue water sail to kick off the season. So get those boats inspected, fill in your One-Minute-Form and come along.
The co-ordinator will be Maurice Byrnes, aboard Southern Cross, (0411 867 567)so give him a call on channel 77 as you pass the Barenjoey Port Hand Pile and he will log you on.
A short cruise briefing will be held in the Edinburgh Lounge at 1900hrs on Friday 28th.
